How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

It goes without saying that your tires are one of the most important parts of your vehicle. Rotating your tires at proper intervals is necessary for the safety of your vehicle. In this article, we will discuss when you should have your tires rotated.

The Purpose of Tire Rotation

Tire tread is particularly crucial when it is raining or snowing. You can hydroplane if you hit a puddle of water or a patch of ice when your tread is uneven from front to back. Rotating your tires keeps all four tires evenly worn, which will keep you safer while driving.

Why Do Tires Wear Unevenly?

The tires at the front of the vehicle are under greater pressure than those in the back due to a few factors, and the first is braking. When you hit the brakes, your car's weight distribution shifts, causing an added burden to fall on the front tires. In addition, all of the steering is done with the front tires, and over time, this leads to a reduction in tread. This effect is amplified when the automobile is front-wheel drive with the engine and transmission sitting over the wheels.

When to Rotate

The best answer to this question will be found in your owner's manual, as this can vary from vehicle to vehicle. The industry standard will be between 5,000 and 6,000 miles, though for some vehicles, Subarus for example, it is recommend that you do it every 7,500 miles. If your car is all-wheel drive, some experts advise rotating the tires sooner, around every 3,000 miles. A good way to remember to rotate your tires is to have it done every time you have your oil changed.
